"Living in History" Creative Arts and Climate Action

Scientific facts don't have an emotional response in many people and this is where the creative arts have an important role to play in climate action. Use your unique networks and talents to transmit as skillfully as you can. If you’re an artist, make climate art. If you’re a musician, make climate music. If you are a writer, write climate poems, novels and picture books.

This poem I wrote a few years ago is not a great poem but it sums up how it is millions of choices that we make every day that determine the fate of the world we live in.

Living in History

The oddest thing about
living in history
(A crucial time in history )
Is how mundane it is.

The mundane minutiae of life
Cooking
Eating
Cleaning
Working
Playing
Shopping
Sleeping
REPEAT
REPEAT
REPEAT

But it's the choices
The little choices
The little mundane choices
The millions of little mundane choices

Meat or vegetables
Local or international
Plastic or non-plastic
Convenience or planning
Drive or walk
On or off
Entertainment or education
Secondhand or new
Recycle or throw away
Buy or borrow
Write a letter or watch TV
Change or apathy
Protest or PlayStation

And I’m tired
Too tired to choose
But then I think of people who are tired of
Building sea walls
Walking for clean water
Looking for food
Looking for safety
Living in pollution
Scratching for a living
Watching kids die
Moving to safety……

Lots of little choices
Little mundane choices
Millions of little mundane choices made by millions of people

Pushing us
Inexorably
Towards our future
